Members Excursion to Pueblo La Plata

We are excited to begin a new year of discovery! Join us for a member’s hike and visit Pueblo La Plata, located South of the Verde Valley on a large plateau called Perry Mesa. This short walk will give us spectacular views of Silver Creek and Pueblo La Plata, a suspected fortress with petroglyphs associated with the Perry Mesa Tradition.

 

On January 11, 2000 the Agua Fria National Monument was established by President Clinton through Presidential proclamation. It is managed by the Bureau of Land Management, and under monument status the level of protection and preservation of resources within the monument have been enhanced.

 

Itinerary 

9:00am: Meet at the Verde Valley Archaeology Center & Museum to arrange carpooling. Or, if you are traveling directly to the site please meet East of the Bloody Basin Road Exit at 9:45am. Pueblo La Plata is a ten-mile drive on Bloody Basin Road. The road is in good condition but carpooling in an SUV type of vehicle is strongly recommended.

 

If wet weather is forecasted, the hike will be postponed. Please pack a picnic lunch so we can break for lunch along the way. Needed will be water, sturdy shoes, and walking sticks if part of your hiking accessories.

 

The hike leader is Richard McGaugh who is from a fourth-generation Verde Valley family and has spent his time studying and exploring Central and Northern Arizona. Richard is a VVAC Docent and Volunteer. He is also a VIP Interpretative Ranger at Walnut Canyon National Monument and Wupatki/Sunset Crater National Monuments. Richard also serves as a VIP Docent at the Museum of Northern Arizona.
